[The last event left Cheyenne in a weird place and since then, she's been rather scarce around the village. Aside from getting food at one of the village restaurants, she's spent most of her time either in her apartment or in the forests just outside the village. Today, she's actually back to her usual spot: sitting on the edge of one of Luceti's many bridges, looking down at the water.]

[A few hours of this goes by until she finally opens her journal and poses a question to the residents. The very thing that's been on her mind all this time.]

It is not uncommon for others to ask questions using these journals, yes? [A pause. She wasn't really expecting an answer to that.]

To act humane.

By humane, would you mean to act as a human does?

Precisely. Someone can look human and be human, but if they do not act it then they are not human.

Then by your definition, if one is not acting human, they are not a person?

Yes. I don't consider myself to be even acquaintances with someone or something that cannot act civilized.

[She has no problems admitting this either.]

What of creatures that are not human? Do you believe they are incapable of becoming a person as well?

The only creatures I know that are not human, from my world, are Witches. They are incapable of being human in any way and only seek to take the lives of others. If someone can show me a creature capable of being a civilized being and a contributing member of society, then they are a 'person' in my eyes.

However, there are many residents here in Luceti who are not human. You are speaking with one of them now.

I understand that. However, you are speaking and acting in a 'humane' way. So I consider you to be a person. Understand? In the same right, if a human in this place would not act in a 'humane' way, I would not consider them a 'person'.

Would you extend this definition to a creature who, despite their best intentions, was dangerous?

There is being dangerous and there is acting out in a dangerous manner. So, which one do you refer to?

I suppose in this regard, I am referring to simply being dangerous.

People can be dangerous, but they choose to act out on that danger. To act out in a way that is not useful to society and creates a detriment is not being a 'person' in my eyes. [...] Everyone sees it different I guess.

Yes, but consider this. You do not need to conform to all definitions. Conform to the one most convenient for you to believe in. For me, it is the definition I have lived by my entire life.

The one most convenient... that does seem like the most ideal option, really. I've yet to see much consensus over which definition is best.

Don't look for a consensus. You should decide what you want in the end. The opinions of others do not matter, unless you are attempting to conform to a norm.

And if I do not know what it is I want?

Then you should think about it, now that people have given you ideas of what it means to be a person.

I suppose that is the most logical course of action, isn't it.

Being logical is also a very important factor to being a person.

[At least for Homura. She doesn't associate with morons.]

Is it? I would think reacting emotionally would be most likely associated with being a person.

Emotions...[her thoughts drift to a certain emotionless being in her world, before coming back to the conversation.] Perhaps. But, emotions can be easily faked.

In that case, would it not mean they are not true emotions? And if they are not true emotions, they would not truly be acting emotionally.

After all, it is possible for a creature to look like a person without actually being a person.

Not always. Some creatures are incapable of emotion, but others choose to fake their own for whatever reason. [Like her, for example.] Still you are right. However, I do not judge by emotion, but by action. They speak stronger than words in the end.
